With thanks
Five years ago, I had no idea this body of work would become a book. But, one thing is clear – the culmination of people coming together made Our Dark Materials a reality.
First and foremost, this story would not have been possible without the humble, cheerful, and open people of Kumik. Not one person knew me when I appeared out of nowhere, but the village welcomed me with open arms and gave me privileged access to document its story. In particular, Tashi Stobdan, Tsewang Zangmo, and Urgain Dorjay opened this door. Thank you for giving me your trust and connecting me with a special part of the world. It will forever hold a place in my heart. I feel immense gratitude for meeting you all and sharing a piece of history together.
The work on black carbon also introduced me to people who profoundly impacted my life. Thank you to Ravi Mishra, whose advice, expertise, personality, and brotherly love made so much of this work possible – the book would be largely empty without you. Thank you to Tanzin Rigzin for accompanying me on that frozen journey into a Himalayan winter. I know no braver person – your positive energy, literal warmth, and companionship made the journey so much more special.
Sifting through the images over the years would have been impossible without the editing help of multiple people. In particular, James Whitlow Delano and Joel Pratley, thank you for always encouraging me to keep following the story despite the roadblocks. My photographic vision has benefited so much from you both.
The text was another beast and benefited hugely from Sterling Ah San and Richard Evirest and their insightful feedback and editing. Thank you both for keeping my best interests at heart. The final output, without the expert eyes and help from Uhwa and Mg Shin, I'd still be scratching my head in confusion. Both of you made a monumental difference to the book. A special thank you goes to my partner in crime, Chohee Kim, for her unwavering support and love – you make my life brighter.
Most of all, nothing in my life would happen without the support of my mother, father, and Nick – all of you are the guiding lights in my life. Without your inspiration, encouragement, support, and unconditional love, I would not be where I am today. I hope this book is a reflection of all your unique influences on me.
